        Program note:

This composition was inspired by a love story about Taiwan's Orchid Island (Lan Yu), which is off the southeastern coast of Taiwan Island:

Once upon a time, Princess Butterfly was forced to marry King Dragon against her will.  She attempted to escape from Taiwan Island, but she before she could make it, she became tired and hungry and nearly drowned in the Pacific Ocean. After being saved by a fisherman from Orchid Island, she decided to marry him and live on Orchid Island. However, King Dragon ordered Red-Headed Spider to kidnap the fisherman in a cave. In order to save the fisherman, Princess Butterfly had to hit her head against Spider's web, but then died in the fisherman's arms. The fisherman held her bleeding body and cried profusely, but he, too, died after seven days. The blood of Princess Butterfly and the tears of the fisherman flowed out of the cave, and wherever it went, butterfly-like orchids bloomed.  Orchid Island received its name due to its abundance of butterfly orchids, which are also known as Phalaenopsis.

This composition does not mean to tell the story, but to create a drama that expresses the love between Princess Butterfly and the fisherman by using rich harmonies and textures. This piece was commissioned and written for violinist Hsuen Lee and pianist Shih-Hsing Chang in 2007.
